Hockey

Known as "BC's best sports town," hockey has been the lifeblood of Trail for generations with a long and storied history.

Dating back to the early 1900's Trail's hockey teams have dominated the provinvial hockey scene and have the distinction of being the last amateur hockey team to win the world championships in 1961. After a their world championship win, the 1938-39 Trail Smoke Eaters, one the best amateur teams to play hockey in Canada left a legacy for others to follow, most notably, the 1961 World Championship and 1962 Allan Cup Champions.

Still a dominant team today the Trail Smoke Eaters now play in the BCHL. The "Smokies" as they are affectionatley known regularly fill the 2,108 seat Cominco Arena in downtown Trail.

Supported by a large and dedicated fan and volunteer base Trail has hosted many high profile hockey events from NHL training camps, international exhibition games, to the more recent World Junior A Hockey Championships featuring Russia, Canada, Germany the USA and Belarus that was successful to the point of Canada Hockey officially endorsed the City of Trail as a pre-competition training location for itnernational teams leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics.
