Figure Skating

Two local figure skating clubs based out of Rossland and Trail in their respective arenas maintain active clubs both recreationally as well as competitively.

Most recently Madeline Edwards who got her start with the Rossland Figure Skating club along with her ice dancing parter Zhaokai at 12 years old have captured the gold medal at the 2009 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals in the Juvenile Ice Dancing division.

With three rink complex's within a half hour drive of one another the region is ideally suited to host training camps and high end competitive events.

The centre piece of the figure skating facilities in the region is the Trail Memorial Centre which includes the 2,108 seat Cominco Arena as well as a smaller warmup rink under the same roof.

A well educated local sports community and a large and passionate volunteer base to draw from the Trail Rossland area has hosted a number of successful figure skating events including the BC Winter Games in 2006 and 1982.

Madeline Edwards

Madeline Edwards is a young skater quickly rising through the ranks in the figure skating world. Born and raised in Rossland Madeline got her start in the sport with the Rossland Figure Skating Club. Competing in dance pairs with her partner Zhao Kai Pang she has made the Canadian Junior team having won gold in a number of recent competitions, including the 2009 Canadian Juvenile Dance champions.

Trail Memorial Centre

The Trail Memorial Centre contains the 2,108 sat Cominco Arena complete with 8 foot high glass all the way around the rink, excellent ice quality and a four sided video scoreboard system with live broadcasting capabilities. Eight dressing rooms, ample space for equipment storage and close easy access to excellent medical facilities make this facility an ideal venue for hosting international teams and training camps.

Location: 

Situated on the banks of the Columbia Rivers in the heart of downtown Trail the arena and sports complex are within easy walking distance of Trail’s shops and restaurants. The facility is only 200 meters away from a deluxe hotel with excellent accommodations and is 1km away from the regional hospital with over 100 medical doctors and specialists. Also located in the complex are an 8 sheet curling rink, full sized gymnasium with seats for 1,000, full banquet kitchen facilities, squash and racquetball courts.

Rossland Arena

The Rossland Arena built in 1947 has been raising hockey champions for over 50 years. Home to NHL Stanley Cup Winner Dallas Drake, Rossland’s high altitude at 1,023 Meters (3,400 feet) and consistently cold and dry weather along with dedicated long term rink staff create a hard and fast ice surface commonly known as BC's best ice surface. The arena which seats 800, with available parking for 150-200 cars is located within an easy 2 block walk of the restaurants, hotels and shops of the pedestrian friendly downtown Rossland Core.

Location: 

2 blocks from Rossland’s Historic Downtown Core on 2nd Avenue. Only a ten minute drive north of the Canada/US Border, a 2.5 hour drive from Spokane International Airport (Washington State) and 3.5 hour drive from Kelowna International Airport. Rossland is easily accessible from major airports from both Canada and the United States. The regional airport of Trail is a 20 minute drive, and Castlegar airport is a 30 minute drive.

Beaver Valley Arena

Located in the heart of the Pastoral Beaver Valley in the Village of Fruitvale, the Beaver Valley Arena provides the heartbeat that drives the sports life of the valley. Home to the Beaver Valley Nite Hawks hockey team and local figure skating club, the 600 seat arena provides solid cold ice and a friendly small town atmosphere with a vibrant volunteer culture that rallies around events making them successful for event organizers as well as the local population.
